Helensburgh, Hill House and the Submarine Centre

Step into Colquhoun territory with a visit to Helensburgh and two of its iconic features. Helensburgh is a handsome Victorian holiday resort on the River Clyde to the west of Glasgow. The town was formed at the end of the 18th century by Sir James Colquhoun who named Helensburgh after his wife – Helen. The popular Victorian holiday destination boasts a long promenade, beautiful parks and pretty gardens. Explore Hill House - the town’s most famous feature. This National Trust property is the finest domestic masterpiece of the famous Scottish architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Discover parts of the Hill House usually hidden from view on the walkways around the house. For those with a head for heights (optional), venture onto the walkway over the roof to see the house in a way that even Mackintosh himself could not experience – please note you will be climbing 54 steps to a height of 15 metres from the ground! This excursion also offers you the chance to immerse yourself in Britain’s maritime history with a visit to the Submarine Centre. Their exhibitions explain and present the stories and engineering behind the Royal Navy Submarine Service through 360° panoramic video.

Isle of Bute & Mount Stuart House

An island on the Firth of Clyde, Bute is one of the most varied and interesting islands on the west coast. From rolling landscapes to craggy moorlands and sandy beaches, Bute is a haven for wildlife and walking. It is just a short ferry ride to the Victorian resort of Rothesay, the main town on the island. Enjoy the palm trees and promenade and sample the country’s best preserved Victorian toilets! Mount Stuart House is an outstanding Gothic mansion, built in 1716 by the 3rd Marquess of Bute. During your visit to this amazing home you will see beautiful celestial ceilings, some magnificent marble and the world’s first heated indoor swimming pool. The beautifully laid out gardens also add to the charm of the house.

Glasgow & The Riverside Museum

Glasgow is Scotland’s largest city and is famed for its vibrancy and the friendliness of its people. The city is constantly developing and has an energetic atmosphere. Glasgow’s industrial roots as the ‘Second City of the Empire’ have given the city its character and Glasgow now offers fabulous art galleries and architecture. Glasgow is also home to some of the world’s finest transport in the Riverside Museum – winner of the 2013 European Museum of the Year Award. Sitting on the banks of the River Clyde the museum is home to over 3000 objects which all showcase Glasgow’s rich past. There are an array of objects, from skateboards to vintage cars, and prams to powerful locomotives. Transport yourself to a different time as you walk down a reconstructed cobbled street with shops dating from 1895-1980s and discover a past Glasgow.

Cruise Loch Lomond, Loch Awe & Inveraray

Visit the ‘Queen of the Scottish Lakes’ and explore the famous bonnie banks. Loch Lomond lies in a national park and is an area of outstanding natural beauty. There is a host of wildlife, plenty of stunning views and many activities in and around the national park. Cruise on Loch Lomond to fully appreciate the landscape and to learn about the turbulent history before travelling west towards stunning Lochawe and Inveraray. Overlooking the still waters of Loch Fyne, Inveraray is the most iconic town in Argyll. This pretty town was founded in 1745 by the 3rd Duke of Argyll, head of the infamous Clan Campbell. Inveraray is a classic example of an 18th century planned town and the Georgian architecture remains unspoilt. There is plenty to do and see in the town and a visit to the neo-Classical church and Inveraray jail are a must.
